How to Talk to a Parent About Moving to Assisted Living
Few conversations feel as delicate as telling a parent it might be time to consider assisted living. It can feel like a loss of independence to them — even when it’s coming from a place of love and concern. A few approaches that tend to help:
Start early, and start small. Rather than one big “decision” conversation, raise the topic gradually. Ask how they’re feeling about things at home, what’s getting harder, and what they’d want if things changed.
Focus on what they’d gain, not just what they’d give up. Instead of framing it as leaving their home, talk about the friendships, activities, meals, and support they’d have access to.
Involve them in the decision. Bring your parent along on tours when possible. Feeling like an active participant rather than someone decisions are being made “about” makes a significant difference.
Expect resistance — and that’s okay. It’s common for the first, second, or even third conversation to not go anywhere. Give it time.
Bring in a neutral third party if needed. Sometimes hearing the same message from a doctor, care coordinator, or facility staff member lands differently than hearing it from family.
At Palms Care Facility, we’re glad to be part of that conversation — whether that means a low-pressure tour, a phone call to answer questions, or simply being a resource as your family works through the decision. Contact us anytime.
